An honest Captions (Mirage) alternative

Captions is the strongest mobile AI studio going, and the closest thing here to a direct competitor. The overlap is real on production and near zero on research.

Formats

Captions is the closest thing on this page to a direct competitor, so this comparison is less tidy than the others. Worth noting up front: the company rebranded to Mirage in late 2025 while keeping the Captions app, so you may see both names.

What Captions does well

It started as the best mobile captioning app and grew into a full AI studio: automatic subtitles, dubbing across dozens of languages, lip sync, background removal, colour grading, speech correction, and AI avatars through Mirage Studio and AI Twin.

The mobile-first execution is genuinely good. If you shoot on your phone and want to finish on your phone, very little else comes close.

It also overlaps with us more than Opus Clip or Submagic do, because it generates talking-head video from a digital twin. We are not going to pretend that gap does not exist.

Where the two overlap on production, and where they diverge on research

Where they actually diverge

Both can put words in your mouth on camera. The difference is where the words come from.

Captions gives you production tools and a blank prompt. You supply the idea. GrowthCamel starts by finding which ideas already worked in your niche — measured against each creator's own baseline, not raw view count — and writes the script from that evidence.

So the overlap is real on the production half and near zero on the research half. If you already know what to say every day, that research is wasted on you and Captions is the better-featured studio.

Pricing

At the time of writing Captions has a free tier without AI credits, then Pro around $9.99, Max around $24.99, and Scale tiers from roughly $69.99 upward, on a credit model where generative features draw down a monthly allowance. Credit pricing makes the real monthly cost harder to predict than a flat subscription. GrowthCamel starts at $15.60 a month. Check both for current numbers.

Which should you pick? If you have a content plan and want the best mobile production studio, Captions is excellent and probably the better buy. If the blank calendar is the problem, more production tools will not fix it. That is the only part of this we claim to do better.

Questions people ask

Is Captions the same as Mirage?

The company rebranded to Mirage in late 2025 while keeping the Captions app, so both names refer to the same product family.

Do both tools make talking-head videos?

Yes. This is the real overlap. Captions offers AI Twin and Mirage Studio; GrowthCamel generates video from a voice and photo you supply once.

What is the actual difference then?

Where the words come from. Captions gives you production tools and a blank prompt. GrowthCamel starts from posts that measurably outperformed their creator's baseline and writes from that evidence.

Which is better for captions and dubbing?

Captions, clearly. That is where it started and it remains stronger at subtitling, dubbing and mobile editing.
